ClassGraphic Course topics include: legislation and codes for power engineers, code calculations - ASME section I,  fuels, combustion, flue gas analysis, piping design, connections, support, steam traps, water hammer, insulation, valves and actuators,  electrical theory and DC machines, AC theory and machines, AC systems, switchgear, safety, electrical calculations, control loops and strategies, instrument & control devices, distributed and logic control, safety management programs, fire protection systems.

Power engineering is not an apprenticeship trade but is divided into levels of skill and training. These levels are referred to as classes, starting with 4th class power engineering and working up to a 1st class certification.
 
Work experience and course completions followed by rigorous inter-provincial examination allow you to progress from one class to another.
 
To become a 3rd class power engineering you must:
  • Hold a complete and valid 4th class power engineering certification
  • Complete 4 examinations - not in order - A1, A2, B1 & B2 in addition complete 12 months of industry steam time in an approved plant
By completing the Lakeland College online 3rd class courses you may reduce your time in half to 6 months.

What online requirements are there? 
You will use Lakeland College learning management system, Desire2Learn for the online course. The course includes lectures, tests, midterms, discussion groups, peer support and access to an instructor.
 
Do I need access to computer/internet?
High speed internet is recommended, as is using either Firefox or Chrome browsers for the best user experience.
 
What kind of online experience do I need?
You should have a basic understanding of computer and web skills in order to do course work. You should also be able to read and write in English as all of our courses are conducted in English. 
 
Do I need to get a proctor to write my exams?
You will require a proctor for the midterm and final examinations. More details and forms will be available through the online course. Your proctor must be approved before the exams.
